It’s official, they are trying to ruin the newly rebooted Spider-Man franchise which I am throughly enjoying so far.
I’m going to backtrack for a moment. When they announced that Emma Stone was joining the cast of the first Spider-Man, I was elated, because in my mind she would have made the perfect Mary Jane Watson, the tough, feisty redhead in Peter Parker’s life, but she ended up playing a great Gwen Stacey instead.
Now there are rumors floating around that one Shailene Woodley (pictured above) is in talks to play the iconic Mary Jane role. I for one am not happy about this and not for the reason you might think.
As many of you might know Shailene is one of the stars of the ABC Family show The Secret Life of the American Teenager, (I use the term TV show lightly because with the horrendous acting, writing and story lines I think it might be an insult to all other shows out there), and I admit it I kinda wrote her off from having a future acting career until she was cast in The Descendants. For those of you who haven’t seen this movie, I highly recommend it, it’s one of George Clooney’s best. Anyways Shailene was superb in it and my respect for her acting ability grew 10 fold, so the reason that I don’t want her in this role is not her acting chops.
The reason is because I think she has too young of a look and can’t pull off the red hair and Mary Jane attitude. It’s going to be Kirsten Dunst all over again (even though I think Shailene would be way better than Dunst).
Guess we are just going to have to wait and see what happens but I for one am not happy with this development. I could be the only one that cares but if you have strong opinions on this sound off in the comments below.
“The Amazing Spider-Man 2” is due out May 2, 2014.
